The Lord of the Rings Online is a MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) set in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy universe of Middle-earth. It takes place during the time period of The Lord of the Rings, known as the Third Age. The game is developed by Turbine and for a time was supported in Europe by Codemasters. The game is subscription-based and free to play with an optional LotRO Store for purchasing in-game content for real world currency should the player want to.
